How to Garnish an Old Fashioned with a Dehydrated Orange Wheel
Share
The Old Fashioned is the drink that made orange famous behind the bar. Traditionally it gets a twist of fresh peel, but a dehydrated orange wheel gives you the same citrus aroma, looks better in the glass, and lives in your pantry for months. No knife, no sticky board, no half-orange drying out in the fridge.
What you need
- 60 ml (2 oz) bourbon or rye whisky
- 7.5 ml (¼ oz) simple syrup, or 1 sugar cube muddled with a splash of water
- 2 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 large ice cube
- 1 dehydrated orange wheel
How to make it
- Add the whisky, simple syrup and bitters to a mixing glass with plenty of ice.
- Stir for 20 to 30 seconds until well chilled.
- Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube.
- Float or tuck a dehydrated orange wheel on top.
The garnish
Rest the wheel on the ice so it sits just above the surface. Give the glass a gentle swirl before your first sip: as the wheel takes on a little moisture, it releases more of its orange oil. Want a deeper colour? Try a blood orange wheel instead.
Use our Dehydrated Orange Slices, or get orange and blood orange together in the Orange & Blood Orange Mix.
Storing your wheels
Keep the pouch sealed in a cool, dry place away from sunlight and reseal it after each use so the wheels stay crisp.
Drink responsibly. For a zero-proof version, the same wheel works beautifully in sparkling water or iced tea.
